Karl Sweeney 51 years old, Surrey
Karl has faced a significant medical journey, becoming a double below-knee amputee amid the unique challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Previously a logistics manager, Karl had an active lifestyle, enjoying cycling and hiking. His health began to shift when he developed leg pain, leading to a diagnosis of intermittent claudication. After a series of procedures, his condition worsened, resulting in his first amputation. When the same pain returned in his other leg, further complications led to a second amputation in June 2024.
Karl draws on meditation and mindfulness as essential tools to stay positive and manage his outlook.

Why did he join the AmpuNATION project?
Losing both legs has been a life-altering journey, and going through it during the pandemic only made it harder. With the right information and support earlier on, I could have been better prepared. I hope that by sharing my experience, I can help others facing amputation know what to expect and the tools that have helped me to support me in this transition.
