Bryan Haggard 80 years old, Leicester
Bryan is a former active walker who once enjoyed five-mile weekend treks with his wife. His life changed after developing severe foot blisters that were initially overlooked.
A podiatrist suggested Bryan might have neuropathy, prompting further medical investigations. Over time, his mobility declined as he lost feeling in his foot. Following a bypass procedure, during which he suffered a heart attack, Bryan developed an ulcer on his ankle. Despite additional attempts to improve his circulation through angioplasty, these efforts were unsuccessful, ultimately leading to the decision to amputate his right leg below the knee—a decision Bryan felt was largely out of his control.
Why did he join the AmpuNATION project?
Through sharing his story, Bryan hopes to raise awareness about the importance of timely diagnosis and comprehensive support for those facing similar medical challenges.
It’s been two years since my amputation, and I’ve felt like a prisoner in my own home. I never expected to lose my independence like this. I want people to know the importance of being vigilant about their health and getting support early on so they don’t end up in a similar position.
