Allan Gayner 80 years old, Tyne and Wear
Allan is a retired trauma and orthopaedic surgeon. Recently, Allan underwent a single below-knee amputation following complications from ulcers and an aneurysm behind his right knee.
The decision to undergo amputation for Allan was complex as he had performed similar procedures throughout his career. His understanding of the potential complications made the choice both informed and challenging. Since his operation, Allan has set and achieved numerous "mini goalposts" to regain his independence — such as returning home, managing crutches, taking a taxi, and visiting local shops.
Why did he join the AmpuNATION project?
As a former surgeon, knowing all the risks and realities of amputation made it harder when it became my only choice. My biggest message is for people at risk, especially those with diabetes or who smoke, to be proactive with their health. Watching for early signs and acting quickly can improve outcomes and possibly prevent such drastic measures.
